Just Started Invisalign® Treatment? Here Are 3 Things You Need to Know.

If you’ve just started Invisalign treatment, congratulations on taking a big step toward a better smile.

At American Dental Clinic in San Diego, California, we’ve had a front-row seat to watch Invisalign explode in popularity — 18 million people and counting have used this innovative alternative to traditional braces.

In most cases, these discreet, clear plastic aligners can accomplish the same goals as braces without the bulky metal brackets and wires — and no one can tell you’re wearing them.

Here are three things you need to keep in mind as you wear your Invisalign trays:

1. Wear them 22 hours a day

Two significant advantages of Invisalign are the trays are practically invisible and they’re removable. But use that power responsibly. If you take them out too much, your teeth won’t adjust as quickly as they should. We recommend wearing them for at least 22 hours each day.

You can and should take the trays out when you eat, drink anything other than water, and brush your teeth. You can also occasionally take them out for a special event; otherwise, keep them in your mouth, even when asleep.

If you don’t wear them enough, your treatment takes longer, and we may have to adjust your plan.

2. Keep your teeth and trays clean

Maintaining your regular oral hygiene routine is essential. Take your trays out to brush and floss your teeth at least twice a day.

Ideally, brush your teeth every time after you eat so food particles won’t be trapped between your teeth and the trays, which could allow bacteria to build up and cause cavities.

You should also regularly clean your Invisalign trays. Rinse them in running water and clean them with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a gentle antibacterial soap. You can also soak them in a solution of water and hydrogen peroxide or baking soda.

3. Wear your retainer after treatment

All the hard work to build a beautiful smile with Invisalign goes to waste if you don’t wear a retainer after your treatment. Why? Teeth try to move back to their original position, so fight this drift with a retainer that holds the new position of your teeth.

You probably only have to wear the retainer at night, but follow your dentist’s or orthodontist’s directions.
